What if an iPhone manufacturer bought Nissan?

It’s time for major maneuvers for Nissan. The renowned Japanese manufacturer, in deep crisis, is attracting the interest of two very different players: Honda, a long-standing rival, and Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant. While the logic seems to lean towards an alliance with Honda, Foxconn could potentially stir the pot with an unexpected and ambitious strategy.

On paper, a rapprochement with Honda seems obvious. The two manufacturers share a common history and a Japanese vision of the industry. An alliance would allow Honda to strengthen its leadership in the domestic market and accelerate its electric transition. Nissan, for its part, would find in Honda a strategic partner to boost its sales and restore its credibility.

But Foxconn is not here to sort lentils for iPhone objectives while watching the two brands make peace like good Japanese friends. Known for assembling our high-tech gadgets, the Taiwanese titan dreams of establishing itself in electric vehicles. And for that, it’s not just about acquiring technology or a factory. Foxconn is eyeing Nissan’s legacy and could take the opportunity to buy this Japanese flagship at a lower cost. A hundred years of history and a globally recognized brand image would be a masterstroke for the iPhone manufacturer, transforming a (huge) handful of dollars into international renown. And what about NISMO, Nissan’s prestigious racing division, which would fall into the bride’s basket? Rest assured, unlike Honda, which would be forced to preserve Nissan’s independence, Foxconn would have no scruples about reshaping the company in its image.

What to expect from these major maneuvers? Will Nissan dare to sell its soul to Foxconn to survive, or will it prefer a more traditional alliance with Honda? Common sense seems to favor the latter scenario, but experienced actors like Carlos Ghosn have raised concerns about Honda’s interest in entangling itself with a dying partner. The surprise could very well come from Taiwan.
