Inter-files

After numerous back-and-forths and experiments, inter-file riding (IFR) is officially incorporated into the Highway Code.

Tomorrow, January 11, 2025, marks a historic milestone: inter-file riding will be permanently authorized across the entire national territory for all two- or three-wheeled motorized vehicles.

IFR, a key issue for the French Federation of Angry Motorcyclists (FFMC), finally becomes a legal practice after years of fighting and experimentation. This victory is enthusiastically welcomed by motorcyclists, although challenges remain regarding its implementation and rider education.

As a reminder, IFR allows two-wheelers to circulate between lanes in case of traffic jams. Initially tested in 21 departments, this practice has proven effective in terms of safety and traffic flow. On routes such as the Paris ring road, the accident rate remained low despite heavy traffic, validating the effectiveness of this measure.

The road to this officialization was not without obstacles. Last summer, false announcements about an imminent wave of fines caused concern, but these were denied by facts. The extension of the experimentation until July 2025, now expired, helped establish a solid framework through collaboration between the FFMC and Road Safety authorities.

Here are the main points to remember:

Motorcycle riders (category L3e) and motorized tricycles (category L5e) with a maximum width of 1 meter. On motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central median with at least two lanes in each direction.
In dense traffic established in continuous lanes.
When the speed of other vehicles is limited to 50 km/h maximum, with enough space between vehicles, on an unobstructed road (no works, snow, or ice) and respecting specific speed limits:
– 50 km/h maximum if the lanes are moving,
– 30 km/h maximum if a lane is stopped,
with the prohibition of overtaking another vehicle during IFR.

When traffic becomes fluid again, re-enter the lane without delay.

Penalties for non-compliance
Class 4 fine (€135)
License suspension up to 3 years (possibly limited to non-professional journeys).
Loss of 3 points on the license.

This official recognition marks a turning point, but also calls for responsibility. The tolerance once granted to motorcyclists should not be jeopardized by dangerous or excessive behaviors. Law enforcement, now supported by clear legislation, can better target abuses without stigmatizing a practice that has proven its benefits.

The integration of IFR into the Highway Code is a major advancement, symbolizing fruitful dialogue between motorcyclists, public authorities, and associations. It is now up to each individual to play their role in making this practice an example of harmonious coexistence on our roads.
