Volkswagen is gaining popularity in the Land of the Rising Sun and is preparing to unveil three electric concepts at the Auto Shanghai Motor Show.

Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy is taking shape with the presentation of three electric concept cars at the Auto Shanghai Show, which runs from April 23 to May 2, 2025. This show, one of the most significant in the world, provides an opportunity for Volkswagen’s three Chinese joint ventures to showcase their vision of electric and connected mobility.

The models include an electric sedan from FAW-Volkswagen, a B-segment electric SUV with EREV technology (range extender) developed by SAIC Volkswagen, and a 100% electric SUV designed by Volkswagen Anhui. These vehicles embody Volkswagen’s new “China DNA,” combining advanced technologies, redesigned aesthetics, and 30% reduced development times.

These concepts are part of the New Energy Vehicles (NEV) category, which in China includes all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended vehicles. Volkswagen plans to launch more than 20 NEV models by 2027 to meet all the needs of its local customers.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, stated: “Our ‘In China, for China’ strategy is a success. We have everything needed to maintain our position as an international leader, even in the era of smart connected vehicles: shortened timelines, strong partners, robust local infrastructure, and tailored innovations. These near-production concepts are proof of that.”

Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s Head of Design, added: “We have adapted our European design values—stability, friendliness, and that ‘special touch’—to meet the expectations of Chinese customers. The result is a design that respects our heritage while responding to the aspirations of a new generation.”

The Auto Shanghai show, held biennially since 1985, is a major event in the automotive industry. This year, more than 1,000 exhibitors from 17 countries are expected, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
