Fiat 500e Madrid Swap

Fiat and Free2move launch a pilot project in partnership with Ample, a company specializing in battery swapping systems.

This partnership marks a first in Spain in the field of car sharing, with the introduction of Fiat 500e vehicles equipped for rapid battery swapping. The fleet, initially consisting of 40 Fiat 500e, is compatible with Ample’s technology, allowing for a complete battery replacement in less than five minutes. This approach aims to bypass the limitations of traditional charging infrastructures, optimizing vehicle availability and reducing operational costs. By mid-2025, the fleet is expected to reach 100 vehicles.

Madrid has been chosen as the testing ground due to its commitment to the energy transition and its goal of reducing emissions by 65% by 2030. The project is part of the national strategy aiming for 5.5 million electric vehicles on the road by the same deadline.

The initiative is based on a “test & learn” approach, with a phase for evaluating the technical and operational performance of the technology. The results will allow Free2move, Ample, Fiat, and Stellantis to determine the feasibility of a potential larger-scale deployment.

Stellantis, through its Fiat and Free2move Charge brands, supports this program. The data collected will contribute to the consideration of alternative charging solutions for electric vehicles.

Ample’s system will be showcased at MOVE 2025, an international event dedicated to sustainable mobility, on June 18 and 19 in London. A live demonstration of battery swapping is scheduled at the Stellantis Ventures booth.
