We weren’t expecting it, and that’s probably what makes it even more enjoyable. A year after its presentation in Locarno, the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, a show car with a flamboyant style and an almost extravagant name, is going into production. And not halfway: this special edition, produced in only 1990 units, pays an offbeat but sincere tribute to the 1990 Golf Fire and Ice, with a serious breath of fresh air.

The very serious German brand hasn’t often accustomed us to such colorful initiatives. But here is a truly delightful sidestep! With a flashy Ultraviolet metallic shade, flame-red inserts, shiny 20-inch wheels, and light projections of “fire” and “ice” on the ground, this ID.3 GTX fully embraces the fun factor. And we love it.

Volkswagen forgets a bit about its good manners

Inside, the same orchestrated madness: “On Fire” red on the driver’s side, “Keep Cool” blue on the passenger side. The cushioned seats styled like a BOGNER FIRE+ICE down jacket do nothing to calm the situation. It’s bold, original, and above all very well executed.

Under this bold shell, the performance is also impressive: 286 or 326 hp, 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, a 79 kWh battery for nearly 600 km of WLTP range, and charging from 10 to 80% in 26 minutes. On the chassis side, it’s serious too, with DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) and optional sport tires.

In summary, this FIRE+ICE is a true joyful interlude in the Volkswagen catalog. A collector’s model, straddling the line between embraced nostalgia and electrifying modernity.

In terms of pricing, as expected for a limited series, it’s not cheap but rather hot! In Germany, this ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE starts at 56,020 euros for the 286 hp version. The most powerful variant, equipped with 326 hp and the DCC chassis as standard, requires additional financial effort with the exact price yet to be specified. Prices for the French market will be announced very soon.
