Tesla continues to have fun with the ecological bonus – now CEE Prime – in France by adjusting prices in Europe as it pleases.

The ecological bonus does not exist in Germany? No problem, Tesla now offers a 3000 euro discount automatically on the new Model Y, regardless of its configuration. Whether it’s the Propulsion, Long Range Propulsion, or All-Wheel Drive Long Range, the entire Model Y range is included in the discount.

You might say that this is the case for the Model 3 in France… but it is also true in Germany. Therefore, Tesla raises yet again the question of the relevance of state support for electric cars. Manufacturers seem capable of shouldering the effort depending on the region. In France, it seems preferable to pay taxpayer money as additional margins for Tesla… in particular.

The situation is even more amusing considering that Elon Musk, the most famous libertarian in the world, constantly denounces unnecessary state spending, including in the United States, but is more discreet when it comes to his electric car business.

The Model Y at the same price in Germany and France?

Factually, yes. However, on one side of the Rhine, each Tesla Model Y sold costs a minimum of 3180 euros to the community (and up to 4280 euros), versus zero on the other side, as Germany has eliminated purchase aids at the beginning of 2024.

Similarly, registration taxes are much less accommodating, with registration costing 980 euros in Germany, compared to 453 euros in France. This will undoubtedly rekindle discussions about the relevance of French taxation, especially as the country’s finances are in a dire state. As for VAT, it is 19% in Germany compared to 20% in France.

In any case, understanding Tesla’s pricing is utterly incomprehensible. In Germany, the Model Y Propulsion is listed at 44,990 euros, just like in France, before the 3000 euro promotion. That makes it 41,990 euros. Conversely, the Long Range Propulsion starts from 49,990 euros (before promotion), compared to 46,990 euros in France… to qualify for the CEE Prime. Finally, the All-Wheel Drive Long Range comes to 52,990 euros, also the same as in France. But with the bonus, the latter thus drops to 49,990 euros…

This proves that Tesla still has room to lower the prices of its cars. At Mobiwisy, we have always supported limiting purchase aids to electric cars priced under 30,000 euros while considering increasing the amount of this aid. Electric cars should become more accessible at the base level, providing maximum purchasing power to those on low incomes. Not to those who can afford cars costing nearly 50,000 euros with options.

The rules of the game are poorly designed, and manufacturers take advantage of it. Until the moment when all support is removed, for everyone…
