You will never call a Volkswagen by a number again

At Volkswagen, it’s time to get back to basics. No more numbers, and back to names for electric cars.

After naming its electric models ID.3, ID.4, or ID.7, Volkswagen has decided to inject a bit of soul into its cars. The next generation of electric city cars will no longer carry just a simple number, but a name that speaks to everyone: welcome to the ID. Polo.

Why this shift? Simply because numbers have never truly made customers’ hearts race. While the ID.3 and ID.4 have impressed technically, no one has ever proudly told their friends that they drive “the three” or “the four.” Names, on the other hand, resonate differently. Who doesn’t have a memory associated with a Golf, Polo, or Passat?

Volkswagen has therefore chosen to capitalize on this emotional capital. Thomas Schäfer, the brand’s head, sums it up: “Our models are firmly rooted in people’s minds.” The ID. Polo, scheduled for 2026, will be the first to follow this new strategy. And it won’t be alone: the sporty version will proudly carry the GTI name, becoming the ID. Polo GTI, promising electric thrills… but always true to the Volkswagen spirit.

This decision is not just a marketing gimmick. It aims to clarify a range that has become difficult to decipher. Between traditional models and 100% electric models, customers will finally be able to navigate: a Polo will remain a Polo, whether it runs on gasoline or electrons.
