The automotive design is undergoing a revolution driven by electrification, but Jaguar and Audi seem to ignore it.

Jaguar and Audi have just surprised everyone by unveiling concept cars that seem to turn their backs on all logic. Released from the technical constraints of thermal engines, designers now have the opportunity to completely reinvent the proportions of a car. The compact blocks of electric motors, combined with batteries housed in the floor, offer unprecedented freedom: shortened hoods, forward-placed cockpits, and more fluid silhouettes. So what can be said about the Jaguar Type 00 and the Audi Concept C ?

In spite of all common sense

Their common feature? Endless hoods, reminiscent of the old V12 GTs. In an electric vehicle, however, these meters of metal no longer have any mechanical justification. They only serve to unnecessarily lengthen the body and give the whole a frozen, almost austere appearance. Where one would expect an enhancement of the cockpit and interior space, passengers find themselves pushed far back, just like in the days of prestigious roadsters.

The same observation applies to the front end. While the cooling needs of an electric vehicle are very limited, Jaguar and Audi continue to design massive, closed grilles. Rather than being an element of ventilation, they become a rigid mask that weighs down the style. Why not take this opportunity to refine the lines, give more sportiness, and visually lighten the proportions? Tesla or Mercedes, for example, have already explored cleaner signatures that are better suited to the electric era.

Behind this conservative choice may lie the desire to reassure a clientele attached to the traditional codes of automotive luxury. But by wanting too much to anchor themselves in the past, Jaguar and Audi risk missing the opportunity to redefine their identity. Because electric is not just a change of powertrain, it is the opportunity to completely rethink the silhouette of the automobile.
