A compact, affordable and stylish electric SUV? Volkswagen is on a roll!

Volkswagen is taking advantage of the IAA Mobility to unveil a model that marks a true return to its roots: the ID. CROSS.

Volkswagen reiterates its mission as the “people’s car” with this compact electric SUV designed to combine accessibility, style, and innovation. After focusing its efforts on the high-end market, the German manufacturer wants to broaden its offerings and make electric cars affordable for the masses. The ID. CROSS does not arrive alone; it is part of a product offensive that will include four new compact and urban models, gradually available starting in 2026, including the ID. Polo and the ID. Polo GTI. The ID. Every 1 will follow in 2027, with a price announced at under 20,000 euros.

Stylistically, the ID. CROSS introduces a design language called “Pure Positive,” simple yet effective, which one immediately connects with. The concept is distinguished by clear and muscular lines, a strong personality, and a touch of friendliness. The design director, Andreas Mindt, claims a lineage with icons like the Golf or the Combi. Its smiling 3D light signature, charismatic C-pillars, and assertive proportions make it an SUV that aims to be a trendsetter, not a follower.

A modern technical base

Measuring 4.16 m long, 1.84 m wide, and 1.59 m high, the ID. CROSS captures the spirit of the T-Cross while offering a spacious cabin. Its 450-liter trunk, complemented by a 25-liter front compartment, makes it a versatile vehicle, capable of meeting both urban needs and family journeys.

Under the bodywork, the SUV is built on the MEB+ platform, an evolution of Volkswagen’s electric base. Produced in Spain, the car will be offered with two battery options, of 38 and 58 kWh, for a range of up to 450 km. Fast charging at up to 125 kW will allow for a charge from 10 to 80% in less than 30 minutes, a crucial feature to appeal to both urban and suburban drivers.

By targeting the segment of small electric SUVs with an expected price of around 25,000 euros, the ID. CROSS positions itself against competitors like the Renault 4 E-Tech. But Volkswagen insists it can meet this challenge thanks to industrial synergies within the Brand Group Core (Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, Cupra), which will allow it to optimize costs and volume. In summary, this ID. CROSS will be available under all the group’s brands, resulting in substantial economies of scale and ensured low pricing.

With the ID. CROSS, Volkswagen demonstrates that electric can be desirable, technological, and popular. A true return to the brand’s original spirit.
