The 10% increase in the regulated rate, through the tariff shield implemented in winter 2022, is not neutral in the bill.

Streams make rivers, and cents make large bills. After an initial 15% increase on February 1st, which saw the price per kilowatt-hour rise from 0.1740 to 0.2062 euros, the Official Journal of the Republic confirmed a second increase starting August 1, 2023. Now, the kWh is legally set at 0.2276 euros, an increase of +10% or +0.0214 euros. That’s semantics, but since January 31, 2023 (the day before the first increase), the actual increase is not +25%, but rather +30.8%! Better yet: since 2017, the price of electricity has doubled! And the aim is to convert the thermal vehicle fleet to electric. Beware of disconnection…

concretely, what does this latest increase represent?

For simplicity, and because this accounts for the majority of cases, we will focus on home charging. On the road, competition is not yet sufficiently developed to bring down the bill, as fast chargers (between 22 and 200 kW power) are necessarily more expensive.

  • For a city car like a Fiat 500 or Peugeot e-208, with an actual average consumption of 15 kWh/100 km, and based on the French average annual distance of 13,000 kilometers (which is 1950 kWh), the additional cost will be: 0.0214 € x 1950 kWh = 41.70 euros
  • For a compact car like a Renault Megane or MG4, with an actual average consumption of 19 kWh/100 km, and still over 13,000 km annually (which is 2470 kWh), the additional cost will be: 0.0214 € x 2470 kWh = 52.90 euros
  • For a family car like a Tesla Model Y or Volkswagen ID.4, with an actual average consumption of 23 kWh/100 km, and still over 13,000 km annually (which is 2990 kWh), the additional cost will be: 0.0214 € x 2990 kWh = 64 euros

It may seem moderate, but factually, recharging at 80% for these respective cases will cost about 7, 12, and 15 euros. Equivalent to 4 to 6 “virtual” recharges per year… pending the next increase. Or, there’s the option to get free charging at Carrefour, for example.
