F1 Tires That Preserve Forests?

Starting from this year, all Pirelli tires used in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship will be marked with the FSC logo. 

The reaction from the most vocal environmental advocates to this association between motorsport and forest protection on tires is expected to be interesting. Yet, motorsport has long been transitioning towards a more sustainable approach. Pirelli has just taken another step forward. This FSC logo certifies that all the natural rubber contained in the tires meets the rigorous environmental and social criteria required by FSC, the leading global non-governmental organization for sustainable forest management. This certification was announced at the end of 2023 when Pirelli renewed its agreement as the exclusive tire supplier for Formula 1 until 2027. It will apply to all tires used on track throughout the season, including during pre-season testing. The FSC-certified tires were introduced following an intensive development program that began in 2022.

A greener rubber

The FSC certification of natural rubber from certified plantations used by Pirelli to manufacture tires for the Formula 1 World Championship is the latest step in the company’s plan to sustainably manage the natural rubber supply chain. To achieve this, a roadmap of best practices has been established in the various countries of origin of the natural rubber, in accordance with the principles and values outlined in Pirelli’s policy on sustainable natural rubber since 2017. This document is the result of consultations with key stakeholders in the natural rubber value chain, including international NGOs, Pirelli’s main natural rubber suppliers, farmers and supply chain vendors, automotive industry customers, and other global organizations.
