Known for its televisions and other electronic products, the Japanese company Sharp is launching a new category with two electric scooters.

Sharp is primarily a specialist in television manufacturing, also offering sound systems or dehumidifiers. Less popular than Samsung, LG, or Sony, the Japanese company has never aimed to enter the mobility market like its rivals—until 2022.

Two models with 25 to 35 km of range

Although Sharp is not venturing into automobiles like Sony, it begins with micro-mobility. It launches the KS1AEUB and KS2AEUB models, riding on the explosion of the electric scooter market. Fairly simple in design, they differ quite a bit from each other.

The Sharp KS1AEUB is the entry-level model, featuring small 8.5-inch wheels and a 238 Wh battery. The second model, the Sharp KS2AEUB, stands out with its curved arch connecting the platform and the front stem. It also has larger 10-inch wheels for improved comfort.

The identical 350 W brushless motor is paired here with a larger 374 Wh battery. Its range is therefore 35 kilometers, compared to 25 km for the smaller version. On the downside, the weight increases to 18.8 kg (that’s heavy!), compared to 14.5 kg for the first.

Connected Sharp scooters

Both Sharp electric scooters share some features. Visually, their small violet LEDs on the sides of the platform and the black finish with small orange elements will distinguish them.

Both models feature ABS brakes and a handy USB port for charging your phone. Smartphones can also connect to the scooters via the Sharp Life app, which primarily serves to lock/unlock the device, as well as providing trip data and battery status. The two models have an IP4X certification, simply ensuring splash protection from water or mud. It’s far from the Plume Allure with its IP65 rating.

High price compared to competitors

However, these two Japanese scooters lean more towards affordability. Soon available in Europe, the KS1AEUB and KS2AEUB will be priced at 449 and 599 euros respectively.

Among competitors, the Xiaomi Mi Scooter 3 and Pro 2 are lighter (around 14 kg). The latter offers more range at 45 km and is cheaper (549 euros). The Smolt & CoX400 is similar to the KS2AEUB on paper (with a 400 W motor and battery) and similarly priced (590 euros), though with a more rugged design. Finally, the Pure Electric Air Pro, now under 600 euros, offers better specifications (461 Wh battery, 500 W motor).
