Prohibited in Paris, shared scooters are limited to Brussels

Heroes of city centers just a few months ago, times are tough for dockless scooter rental providers.
On April 2nd, 90% of Parisian voters opposed the presence of dockless scooters in the streets of the City of Light. By September 1st, 15,000 vehicles had disappeared from the capital. While nearly one-third of these small two-wheelers were redistributed to French cities still accepting them, the majority crossed our borders in search of more welcoming skies, going as far as Tel Aviv or nearby Belgium. But this sudden influx has not been entirely welcomed in the flat country!
With over 20,000 shared vehicles, the Belgian capital has decided to limit their number to 8,000 starting February 1, 2024, restricting the number of operators to two, Bolt and Dott, and ending concessions granted to Lime, Tier, and Voi.
Moreover, « drop zones » or parking areas will also become mandatory under penalty of fines, to prevent sidewalks from being continuously and completely chaotically invaded. To lock the vehicle and thus end the rental period, it will be essential to leave it in these designated zones. In just a few months, more than 1,000 drop zones have been created. In the coming weeks, 500 more will be established.
No total ban is on the agenda, but these measures will be reviewed by the end of the year.
