Tramway Alstom

About the world’s longest battery-powered tram line without catenary, it serves UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Alstom has signed a contract worth over 500 million euros with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) for the supply of an innovative battery-powered tram, on the world’s longest catenary-free line.

This turnkey, fully integrated tram system will consist of 20 cutting-edge Citadis B trains powered by batteries. The 22.4 km line will be a unique blend of opulence, history, and sustainable mobility. Serving 17 stations built in strategic locations, it will facilitate access to the five must-visit historic districts of AlUla, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites: Old AlUla (District 1), Dadan (District 2), Jabal Ikmah (District 3), Nabataean Horizon (District 4), and the historic town of Hegra (District 5).

This ambitious project aims to offer residents and tourists unique transportation options by equipping the region with innovative, climate-adapted trams.

Alstom plays a key role in this project, from designing a complete system to commissioning, including landscape integration, installation, and testing of this battery-powered, catenary-free tramway. Alstom will also provide power supply, signaling, communication systems, depot equipment, and will oversee the full maintenance of the trams and system for 10 years. The maintenance team will have a mobile workshop suitable for all types of inspections to increase flexibility and reduce investment costs, and will deliver high-level training programs to tram personnel to ensure operational efficiency. This project leverages Alstom’s internal expertise in integrated rail systems worldwide. The tram sets will be manufactured across nine French production sites, including La Rochelle for design and assembly.
