The explosion in transportation costs in Île-de-France will be borne by the State and companies to contain fare increases in 2024.

Semantics is an art. Additionally, there are various ways to present the 2024 fare increase in public transportation in Paris and Île-de-France. “Increase” is a sober qualifier, because it would be more accurate to speak of an explosion. After the metro ticket at 4 euros during the Olympic period (let’s bet it will remain in place afterwards for tourists, French or foreign…), the second wave of announcements has arrived.

To ease the pain, Île-de-France Mobilités raises the initial threat. “Île-de-France Mobilités caps the 2024 increase of the Navigo pass. This increase, which could have reached €27 per month, is thus kept in check with inflation in 2024, i.e., an increase of +€2.30 for the monthly Navigo pass. For the following 7 years, Île-de-France Mobilités implements a fare shield, and the increase cannot exceed inflation +1.“

The Île-de-France region had to find additional revenue sources. Companies will pay more (+0.25 points) when tourists are heavily taxed through the tourism tax. Local authorities have committed to increase their contribution by inflation +2% from 2024 to 2028 and by inflation from 2029 to 2031. These additional revenues help moderate the increase in user contribution aligned with inflation for 2024 and at most inflation +1% for subsequent years.

• Imagine R: unchanged rate until the next school year, then €374.40

• Single T+ ticket: €2.15
• Board access ticket via SMS: €2.50
• Unmanned Orlybus ticket: €10.30

• Book of 10 T+ tickets at reduced rate: €9.80

Why such a failure of the system when transportation services in Paris are more deficient than ever?

These revenues are intended to help Île-de-France Mobilités finance the €800 million necessary (which are likely to be doubled or tripled as is customary in France) for the opening of 300 km of new rail lines by 2031. Including 200 km of metro with the new lines 15, 16, 17, and 18 of the Île-de-France metro, the extension of RER E westward to La Défense and then to Mantes, the extension of lines 11 and 14 of the metro, the arrival of T12…
