Car-sharing boosted by the Paris 2024 Olympics

From a somewhat bohemian practice in its early days to a fully structured industry, car sharing continues to attract more and more followers.

Car sharing in France has increased by 43% this year according to the Association of Car Sharing Actors. This growth is driven by increasing economic pressure on households, particularly due to the difficulties in accessing the purchase of a personal vehicle for 64% of French people, according to L’Observatoire Cetelem de l’Automobile 2024.

While it opens new prospects for customers looking for occasional transportation at lower cost, car sharing primarily emerges as an alternative that eliminates the main disadvantage of owning a car: its maintenance and operating costs! Companies, facing the same obstacles, also promote car sharing to optimize their fleet usage and meet corporate social responsibility (CSR) obligations, the well-known and feared CSR.

The trend for 2024 is naturally an increase in activity, but it will also be boosted by an external factor: the Paris 2024 Olympics! The Olympics will attract millions of visitors to France, creating an exceptional demand for flexible mobility solutions. During this period, a known base of 5 million daily users will need transportation, to which 500,000 sports tourists coming to France for the event will be added.

SNCF and Île-de-France Mobilités plan to increase their offer by 15% during this time, but it is already known that this will not be enough, especially since many new infrastructures will not be ready! Too bad for tourists, but good news for car sharing. Because while many Île-de-France residents plan to rent out their homes during this period, why wouldn’t others consider renting out their vehicles? New dedicated lanes for car sharing will even be put in place for this occasion and could remain after the sporting event.
