What is Peugeot’s Hypersquare?

By 2026, Peugeot’s i-cockpit is expected to evolve into Hypersquare, an original steering-wheel-screen combo.

With over 12 million models equipped over the past 12 years, the i-Cockpit has become emblematic of Peugeot’s cabins. The concept is simple: a small steering wheel positioned slightly lower to free up space for placing driver information screens above the wheel. An innovation that has become standard and continues to evolve, as demonstrated by the latest generation of Panoramic i-Cockpit introduced in the new Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008.

The next generation showcased by Peugeot at VivaTech is expected to feature a completely redesigned architecture, where the traditional steering wheel and controls are replaced by the Hypersquare, a rectangular steering wheel inspired by the digital world. With simple clicks or presses, without letting go of the wheel, the driver can control all vehicle parameters. The Hypersquare makes driving more intuitive and simpler. This is made possible by the widespread use of steer-by-wire technology, where the steering column is replaced by sensors. There is no mechanical link between the wheel and the wheels anymore!

A large screen and four alveoli

A large screen located at the center of the steering wheel is surrounded at each of its four corners by circular alveoli that serve multiple functions:

• Totally natural and universal handling of the steering command.
• Driving comfort at your fingertips.
• Activation of vehicle commands through simple thumb impulses.

The tablet-type screen is dedicated to displaying control information. Pictograms of various functions (air conditioning, radio volume, driver assistance, etc.) are displayed on both side sections to facilitate access to the selected command. This command is located inside the circular alveoli and can be accessed by moving only the thumb, without releasing the steering control with the hands.

According to Peugeot, future drivers will discover a gesture very close to the one they use daily with their smartphones.
