This Mercedes Can Tow 1,000 Tons!

Mercedes-Benz Trucks delivered a very special Arocs to Viktor Baumann for hauling up to 1,000 tons.

At the Molsheim factory in France, the Mercedes Arocs was equipped with an pushed axle with hill-start assist via load-shedding control and thus became a four-axle, six-wheel-drive 8×6 vehicle. Additionally, the coupling yoke, the heavy-load displacement device, and heavy-load coupling devices were added at the front, including the Rockinger type 56e heavy-load coupling, and at the rear, the Rockinger type RO58E trailer coupling for 1,000 tons. The SLT chassis behind the cab, with an extra cooling system, a 900-liter fuel tank, and the hydraulic system for the semi-trailer steering, were also added. After approximately 14 weeks, the conditions necessary to become a heavy-duty tractor were met, and the transformation was completed in Molsheim.

The maximum towing capacity of the new Arocs SLT 4463 AS 8×6 is 1,000 tons. For transporting particularly heavy loads exceeding this already extraordinary limit of 1,000 tons, the truck moves in combination with several trucks coupled together. In Baumann’s extreme heavy-duty transport missions, two, three trucks or more, connected to each other, tow a multi-axle platform, such as a low-loader or a tank bridge, while another truck pushes the entire setup. Our Mercedes-Benz Arocs SLT 4463 AS 8×6 is intended to be the final tractor unit and thus the link with the trailer. The company will use, among other things, this special truck for transporting transformers and heat exchangers.
