The Kia EV9 Becomes a Mini Power Plant
With its EV9, Kia launches one of the first large-scale experiments of “Vehicle-to-Grid” in the Netherlands
The electric car is about to take a new step forward. In the Netherlands, Kia is launching a large-scale experiment of the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology with its electric SUV, the Kia EV9. The goal is to use the vehicle’s battery to support the electrical grid when it is in need.
The principle of Vehicle-to-Grid is simple. Thanks to a bidirectional charging station, electricity flows not only from the grid to the car. The battery can also send energy back to the grid during peak consumption periods. The electric car thus becomes a true mobile storage unit.
A major energy challenge
After several tests conducted with the Dutch center ElaadNL, Kia has obtained the necessary approval to allow the EV9 to feed electricity back into the public grid. The manufacturer will now equip 40 customers with a complete solution combining vehicle, bidirectional charger, and energy management application.
Why does this technology generate so much interest? With the development of renewable energies, electrical grids must manage sometimes irregular productions. The batteries of electric cars thus represent a considerable storage capacity. Eventually, thousands of connected vehicles could absorb surplus electricity or help supply the grid during peak demand times.
This experiment marks an important step for the deployment of V2G in Europe. It also illustrates the evolution of the role of the electric car, which will no longer be just a means of transport but also a player in the energy system.
