KIA EV9

The large electric SUV from KIA, the EV9, has introduced an entry-level version with a 76 kWh battery. Interesting?

So far, the KIA EV9 has played the exclusivity card in Europe. It was first necessary to heavily supply its primary international market, the United States. Released about a year and a half ago, it was time to broaden the customer base with a significantly more affordable version.

In fact, the entire catalog of the KIA EV9 has seen a price reduction of about 3000 euros, as the AIR trim with a 99.8 kWh battery, previously the entry-level option, now starts at 70,400 euros. But the version we’re interested in is even cheaper!

With its 7 seats as standard and a modern yet elegant design, the KIA EV9 is a success. It is now available in the AIR trim with a 76.1 kWh battery. Its price drops by 6000 euros compared to the 99.8 kWh version, but let’s evaluate its relevance.

This 76.1 kWh version brings new interest: it is paired with a new electric motor (for the rear wheels) of 160 kW (218 horsepower), compared to 150 kW (204 horsepower) for the heavier version with a larger battery.

And the weight difference is significant: the KIA EV9 with two-wheel drive drops from 2501 to 2392 kg, which is 109 kg less. This is noticeable in terms of dynamism, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time reduced from 9.4 to 8.2 seconds, and a top speed (not particularly impressive) that increases from 185 to 190 km/h.

What about the range?

With 23.7 kWh less battery capacity, one might think that the range would plummet. Indeed, it is mechanically the case, but not to the extent of 23.7%. Dropping from 563 to 443 km on the WLTP mixed cycle, the decline is only 21%. The reason: consumption decreases from 20.2 kWh/100 km to 19.5 kWh/100 km.

In reality, one should not expect more than 400 km of real range, and about 250 km on the highway at 130 km/h.

One major advantage of the KIA EV9 remains its charging speed. The Hyundai group is at the forefront in this area, with power levels reaching up to 210 kW on a fast charger. For alternating current, 11 kW is offered as standard.

Thus, a charge from 10% to 80% at a highway rest area will only take 20 minutes, compared to 24 minutes for the 99.8 kWh version.

In the end, this new version of the KIA EV9 with its “relatively” small battery appears to be very relevant for everyday life.
