Volkswagen’s Accident-Preventing Doors

The new secure door opening system, now standard on Volkswagen’s latest models, reduces the risk of collision.
Who hasn’t had a scare in town when seeing a door open a few meters ahead? Or perhaps it was you who opened your door without paying attention, immediately hearing a screech of tires… or worse?
Volkswagen has developed a system to prevent these inattentive mistakes from turning into tragedy. Such an obvious and indispensable technology makes you wonder why it wasn’t thought of earlier. And it helps explain why Volkswagen enjoys such a reputation for seriousness and quality.
The assistance system alerts the driver and passengers that road users are approaching the stationary vehicle from behind. Within the limits of the system, the assistant can detect cyclists, who are among the most vulnerable road users. In addition to the driver’s and front passenger’s doors, the secure opening system also protects the rear doors. The new ID.7, the new Passat, and the new Tiguan come equipped as standard with this assistance system. For the Golf, the ID.4, and the ID.5, the system is available as an option, with a technically specific version.
This system scans the area behind the vehicle when it is stationary using two rear radar sensors (on the left and right at the bumper level) and warns passengers of danger even before a door handle is operated. If a road user approaches, a LED automatically lights up in the exterior mirror as an initial warning. If one of the door opening devices is nonetheless activated, the door opening is prevented for a short period. If the door is opened, an alarm sounds. Moreover, the assistance system remains active for three minutes after parking, engine shutdown, and interior power cut-off, to cover passenger exit from the vehicle.
Another small step forward in road safety. It’s important to remember, however, that this system, like all driver assistance technologies and other ADAS, does not exempt the driver and passengers from responsibility. An obvious fact that is sadly too often overlooked.
