Tesla and McDonald’s team up in China over a… spoon

No limited edition Tesla Cybertruck by McDonald’s with cup holder and clown face covering, just a simple spoon shaped like a Cybertruck.

The news spread like wildfire on social networks, like a good fake news story, to the point that Elon Musk himself initially expressed surprise upon learning about it, but McDonald’s is indeed offering a limited series spoon with its McFlurry in China. A Tesla partnership in the land of lasting calm certainly warrants this little article as the American manufacturer faces the Chinese wave at the IAA Mobility show in Munich.

The story has all the trappings of science fiction, but after all, what’s so surprising when it revolves around the Tesla universe? A limited edition “Cyber Spoon” will be available for $4 at all good Chinese McDonald’s locations. It will be a limited production with only 50,000 units made.

The real breakthrough came when Elon Musk reacted on his X network with a mixture of emojis and skepticism, mentioning a “Fake news afaik”, afalk meaning “as far as I know”. And he apparently didn’t know because Tesla’s official Weibo account (the Chinese equivalent of X-Twitter) was promoting this mysterious spoon. Musk, a bit late, replied: “In that case, I will definitely have one!” Tasty miss or convoluted communication, either way, the buzz is done!

The operation is limited from September 17 to 26, and it’s not surprising to see queues forming outside restaurants to get one of these prized utensils.

And what about this famous spoon? It features the angular lines and brushed metal look of the Cybertruck, and it looks decidedly like a camping spoon. But regardless of its shape, the pairing of the two names is enough to make it a collector’s item for all lovers of both brands, and they are legion!
