Tesla has published a report on the safety of its autonomous vehicles, drawing a radical conclusion.

Tesla has been publishing a report on the safety of its vehicles every quarter since 2018. This report details the ratio of the number of miles driven per accident, both with the Autopilot technology activated and without it. Over the years, the data has consistently shown that the number of miles traveled before an accident occurs is significantly higher with Autopilot technology compared to the American average.

When Tesla began voluntarily sharing this data in the third quarter of 2018, with a fleet, of course, much smaller than today, Autopilot was already six times safer than a human driver. These figures should be taken with great caution since, by definition, Autopilot aims to minimize errors, which is not always the case with humans…

Tesla prepares for the advent of its FSD technology

Tesla stopped reporting the data after this date in order to provide a structured response to the many detractors who accused the company of manipulating figures. The automaker has now updated the dedicated page to include all collected data, including data from the first quarter of 2024, and unsurprisingly, the results are getting better and better.

According to Tesla, one accident was recorded every 12.2 million miles when Autopilot technology was used between January and March 2024. This is 10 times safer than the American average, with one accident occurring every million miles according to government data. And with Autopilot turned off? It remains exceptional with one accident every 1.5 million miles, but as you can understand, it is nearly 10 times less safe and is on par with the national average.

Ultimately, this study proves that driver assistance reduces the risk of accidents, and one might be tempted to say that’s a good thing!
