Stellantis Achieves Record Number of Patent Filings

The Stellantis alliance files patents like others string together pearls, which gives it the top position in the patent applicants ranking in 2023.

Stellantis ranks first among French patent applicants with 1,542 patents filed in France in 2023, according to the rankings announced by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

The significant investments made by Stellantis in research and development of new technologies are aligned with the goal of providing customers with safer, more affordable, and sustainable mobility solutions. Protecting this work through patents is a key factor in ensuring its success and providing a strategic competitive advantage. Patents and, more generally, intellectual property are a lever for value creation.

Over the past 20 years, Stellantis has regularly been among the top French patent filers, with over 1,000 publications per year. In 2019, the company regained the top spot, then again in 2020, and once more in 2023. These results demonstrate the consistency in commitment, creativity, and technical excellence of Stellantis teams in meeting customer expectations.

The technological areas protected by these intellectual property rights prioritize the major challenges of tomorrow’s mobility:

• They include the development of new powertrains that meet our customers’ expectations for energy transition and sustainable, responsible mobility (100% electric, hybridization, hydrogen): engines, transmissions, batteries, fuel cells, and their control strategies.
• Supporting societal changes involves the development of digital technology, connectivity, new uses, while simplifying our customers’ lives: infotainment, connectivity/Car to X applications, remote diagnostics, over-the-air updates of embedded software, human-machine interfaces/digital cockpits, connected services, and interior equipment.
• The deployment of increasingly advanced driver assistance systems to make our vehicles safer is at the heart of our efforts.
