Digital lighting: Audi’s new security advantage

Audi relies on digitization of light to improve visibility and enhance safety, even in the worst driving conditions.

At Audi, innovative lighting is no longer just about design: it becomes a real safety tool. Dr. Michael Kruppa, Head of Front Lighting Development, details the embedded technologies on the New Audi Q3.

According to him, good lighting is the primary condition for safe driving. Seeing and being seen remains fundamental, especially at night or in bad weather. Audi Matrix LED headlights exemplify this approach: they automatically detect nearby vehicles and adjust the beam to avoid glare, ensuring constant visibility without driver intervention.

However, the real revolution lies in the digitization of light. The new Audi Micro-LED Matrix headlights can project light images directly onto the road. Each micro-LED, individually controlled, can display guiding lines or luminous signals. An innovation that helps the driver better orient themselves while informing other road users of their intentions, for example during a lane change.

And the light speaks

The system can even project warning symbols: a snowflake appears on the road surface when the temperature drops below 4 °C. An intuitive way to alert without distracting the driver.

Compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient, this technology is being integrated for the first time into the compact category with the New Audi Q3. It offers higher contrast, better brightness, and greater efficiency, even in critical visibility situations.
