DeLorean Pepsi

This visual of DeLorean and Pepsi is the kind of teaser we love, one that raises expectations, but could turn out to be extremely disappointing…

When Pepsi officially announces a new collaboration with DeLorean, we can only rejoice. But before getting excited, it’s important to recall that Pepsi is a major partner of the Back to the Future franchise and has never ceased to exploit this endless goldmine. On October 21, 2015, the day Marty McFly arrived in the future, was duly celebrated by Pepsi and Uber. The “The Perfect Ride” campaign allowed Londoners to take a ride in a DeLorean, Pepsi Perfect in hand.

DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was founded in 1975 in the United States, and the DMC-12 only achieved posthumous fame, with only 9,351 units sold until 1982, the year the company went bankrupt. The model’s success came after its commercial release, thanks to the Back to the Future saga (1985-1990). And while DMC’s revival in 2016 focused on restoring old models, the manufacturer announced in 2022 the arrival of a brand new model, the Alpha 5.

If a sequel or remake of Back to the Future were to be made, would the protagonists be behind the wheel of the DeLorean Alpha 5? Presented a year ago, the Alpha 5 has little in common with the DMC-12. At nearly 5 meters long, it is much more imposing than its predecessor, which was only 4.27 meters. But as Doc said quite aptly, “You have to think big in life. If you’re traveling through time in a car, might as well choose one that looks good!” Aesthetically, the resemblance between the two models is far from obvious. However, there are some elements directly inspired by the DMC-12: for example, the two-part front headlights, the three-stripe taillights, the louvres on the rear window, or the DeLorean signature on the left side of the tail. And of course, there are the butterfly doors, an inseparable feature of the original DeLorean.

In the absence of a rupture in the space-time continuum, we will have to wait until December to find out what’s really going on.
