ChatGPT Invades Volkswagen

The latest models will have access to a version of ChatGPT specifically integrated into the automotive environment.

On the occasion of the 2024 edition of CES, the world’s largest electronics trade show, which will be held from January 9 to 12, Volkswagen will showcase the first vehicles equipped with an AI-based conversational robot, ChatGPT, integrated into its voice assistant IDA. In the future, customers will have access to a constantly improving AI database across all Volkswagen models equipped with IDA, allowing them to have their search results read aloud while driving.

ChatGPT is offered with the latest generation of infotainment systems on models like ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, as well as the new generations of Tiguan and Passat, and the latest Golf. For example, IDA can be used to control infotainment, navigation, and climate systems, or to get answers to general questions. In the future, AI will be able to provide more precise responses to more specific questions, thanks to continuous improvements in capabilities. The application can prove useful during car trips, particularly for enriching conversations, answering questions, interacting in natural language, and obtaining vehicle information, all while keeping the hands on the steering wheel.

For the driver, nothing changes. There is no need to create a new account, install a new app, or activate ChatGPT: simply say “Hello IDA” or press the dedicated button, located on the steering wheel, to activate the voice assistant. IDA automatically determines whether to prioritize executing a vehicle function, searching for a destination, or adjusting the temperature. If Volkswagen’s system cannot handle the request itself, it is anonymized and sent to AI, and Volkswagen’s familiar voice provides the response.

ChatGPT has no access to vehicle data. Questions and responses are immediately deleted to ensure optimal information security.
