Every driver has had that passenger in the front seat who can’t help but comment on every movement, point out all potential dangers on the road, cling to the handles when speeding exceeds the legal limit by 2 km/h, and constantly press an imaginary brake pedal before letting out an annoyed sigh. Enough to make you think about the true meaning of “the passenger in the death seat”…

That passenger was quite useful before the advent of GPS when you had to grab the Michelin map to determine the best possible route or anticipate a stop at the gas station to refuel with Super and wipe a little spray on the windshield. But I’m talking about a time you might never have known.

Modern cars have now welcomed a new passenger whose initials are AI or AI depending on their nationality—the famous Artificial Intelligence. Once a child just a few years ago, this passenger is growing every day and learning more and more tasks. It can guide you, entertain you with music or images, optimize your driving conditions by adjusting the temperature or seat position perfectly. In short, a friend who means you well. But also a co-pilot loaded with ADAS like others with Red Bull who monitor your safety, tell you how to drive more efficiently, and even remind you to stay alert with a small vibration in the steering wheel or a gentle sound alert when you stray from your lane. Increasingly intrusive, it can become annoying just like its flesh-and-blood counterpart. Getting scolded by a car you bought is quite the paradox!

But it learns quickly, very quickly, and soon it might drive in your place. Will it do a better job than you? Certainly, but nothing stops you from giving it a little lecture when it makes a sudden swerve, waking you up in the middle of a nap. Yes, the future is exciting!
