Ford Deploys Autonomous Driving in Mustang Mach-E in Europe

Ford announces a major expansion of its level 2+ autonomous driving assistance technology, BlueCruise, on the Old Continent.
Through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, thousands of Mustang Mach-E from the 2021 and 2022 model years will now be able to benefit from Ford’s “hands-free” driving feature, already available on 2024 models.
This deployment comes after regulatory approval of BlueCruise in five new European countries: France, Greece, Hungary, Romania, and Switzerland. These countries join the ten already compatible, including Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
The software update is currently being rolled out to approximately 20,000 vehicles, nearly half of the affected European fleet. This rollout occurs in successive waves to ensure a smooth installation without manual intervention. Ford specifies that two identical vehicles located on the same street may receive the update at different times.
A trial service, then paid
Once the update is completed, owners are invited to activate BlueCruise via the FordPass app, where a 90-day free trial is offered. At the end of this period, the monthly subscription is charged at €24.99 or €280 annually, unless manually canceled.
BlueCruise allows hands-free driving on certain pre-mapped highway sections, known as “Blue Zones,” while monitoring the driver’s attention via an infrared camera. Over 160,000 km of roads in 15 countries are currently covered. In France, more than 95% of highways are already compatible.
Although Romania and Switzerland do not yet have national Blue Zones, vehicles registered in these countries can activate the service and benefit from it in neighboring territories.
With this advancement, Ford continues its innovation strategy focused on safety and comfort, democratizing access to semi-autonomous driving technologies in the European market.
