Do you know how much a ride in a Tesla Robotaxi costs?

There is a lot of talk about Robotaxi, Tesla’s famous autonomous taxi, but without asking how much a ride costs.

Tesla has already launched its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, more than a month ago. Initially priced at $4.20, the ride has just gone up to $6.90. 420 is Elon Musk’s favorite number and 69… who knows why… A 64% increase in less than a month, which some may call excessive, but which, in the American context, remains a real bargain. In fact, this price applies regardless of the distance traveled within the service area, with no variation based on time or demand. In other words, $6.90 (about €6.30) to go anywhere in Austin.

By comparison, in France, most urban taxi rides cost between €12 and €20. In Paris, the initial fare is €4.18, then €1.12 per kilometer, with a mandatory minimum fare of €7.30 (excluding surcharges). A 10 km ride will easily cost you €15, not including additional charges (luggage, waiting time, night, weekend…).

As for ride-hailing services like Uber, while their prices may be slightly more favorable, they remain significantly higher than those of the Texan Robotaxi.

A bet already won by Tesla?

Going further, one can even assert that collective taxis or public transportation services cannot compete on the level of individual door-to-door service. The Robotaxi is therefore currently unbeatable in terms of price.

Of course, the service is not without flaws. Sudden braking, drop-offs in the middle of the road, and a few minor accidents have already been reported. But for €6.30 per ride, without a driver to pay or tips to consider, it’s hard to do better, even in a country like France, where public transport is heavily subsidized.

So naturally, these prices are specific to this experimental period, and many customers will refuse to entrust their physical safety to an autonomous car, even for this ridiculously low price. But history is in the making, and if Tesla succeeds in its bet, individual mobility will certainly experience its greatest revolution… since the creation of taxis!
