A Surprising World Record for Toyota!

You are probably familiar with Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. But in its shadow, Toyota’s CUE is far more fascinating.

Born in 2017 under the impetus of Toyota’s engineering company, a team of passionate volunteers, CUE began as a project aimed at developing artificial intelligence capable of playing basketball. Since its humble beginnings, the robot has undergone remarkable evolution. With each version, it has refined its skills, progressing from simple shots to long-range attempts, learning to dribble and mimic movements similar to those of a human player.

In 2019, CUE successfully completed 2,020 consecutive free throws, setting a Guinness World Record for the highest number of successful free throws by a humanoid robot. Today, in its sixth generation, CUE proudly wears the number 96 on the professional Alvark Tokyo team, symbolically marking its presence in the sports world.

While Tesla develops its humanoid robot Optimus, focused on industrial and domestic tasks, CUE concentrates on a completely different field: exploring human abilities through sport. Although both robots showcase technological ingenuity, CUE embodies a playful and creative approach, combining advanced technology with collective passion.

The Longest Shot

In 2025, CUE achieved an unprecedented feat, the longest shot ever made by a humanoid robot, covering a distance of 24.5 meters. For comparison, a standard FIBA basketball court measures 28 meters. This shot means scoring a basket from one end of the court to the other.

The young developers on the team, inspired by the 2019 record, spent months working to perfect CUE. They installed 350 cables, reinforced the robot’s right arm, and adjusted every detail of its shooting posture. Each shot symbolizes not only a technological achievement but also a collective dream.

While Tesla and other players push the functional limits of humanoid robots, CUE continues to captivate the collective imagination.
