The French charging network passes the test

A head group of four and a network considered more than satisfactory. France makes a grand exit in this evaluation.
With the increasing number of electric cars, the need for charging infrastructure continues to grow, and existing charging points are under increasing pressure. Like any test, the one conducted by German media Connect should be analyzed with caution, but it deserves attention due to its seriousness. Besides tests in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, site charging point operators (CPOs) have been tested for the first time this year in France. Result: TotalEnergies takes first place ahead of Fastned, Allego, and Ionity.
No movement without recharge
“Our network testing reflects developments and their impact on user experience, which can indeed suffer from the increasing load caused by rising demand. Congratulations to TotalEnergies for doing the best! Overall, there is still room at the top,” states Hannes Rügheimer, author of connect.
For evaluating charging station operators, tests took place between late July and late August 2023 – with some additional tests in early September. During these tests, drivers traveled around 1800 kilometers in France and made 20 charging stops. In total, four CPOs were tested: Allego, Fastned, Ionity, and Total Energies. At each charging stop, test drivers completed a comprehensive evaluation questionnaire – about the charging station, the charging process itself, and test calls to the providers’ hotlines.
TotalEnergies ranked first in the evaluation, with 841 points and a “good” rating, followed by Fastned with 801 points and also a “good” rating. Allego came in third with 743 points and a “satisfactory” rating, Ionity in fourth place with 736 points and also a “satisfactory” rating.
The testing procedure
For the evaluation, testing teams conducted journeys across France and visited five stations per CPO. Registration and billing were done either via recharge cards and apps or through ad hoc payment options supported by the CPO. During charging, the teams wrote detailed reports on site conditions, the charging process, and any encountered errors. They also contacted the providers’ hotlines to test service quality. A special evaluation grid was developed for testing charging networks by connect and further refined this year. The weighting of different test points was adapted to everyday e-mobility practice.
