How Bordeaux Is Going All Out on Electric Vehicle Charging
This page is translated from the original post "Comment Bordeaux met le paquet sur la recharge de voitures électriques" in French.

With the increase of electric cars in the metropolis, discover how Bordeaux plans to expand its charging station network in the coming months.
More electric cars to replace thermal vehicles is better for air quality (and noise). But the infrastructure for charging needs to keep up. Otherwise, there will be long waits or even impossibility to recharge at will, sometimes pushing people towards hybrids or gasoline. Bordeaux Métropole has a solution for that.
25 new charging stations per year
Out of the 75,279 charging points for electric (and plug-in hybrid) vehicles in France, 558 are located within the Bordeaux territory across 135 stations. Among them, the metropolitan area operates directly 240. They are distributed across 85 stations, of which only 8 are fast chargers.
To accommodate the rise in sales of new electric cars, Bordeaux will convert the 65 former Bluecub stations – closed in August 2020 – with an investment of €400,000, and create 20 new charging station sites. The local authority is mainly focusing on “fast chargers” (over 7.4 kW) and aims for the opening of 25 stations per year until 2030.
The goal? Better coverage to fill in the recharge deserts, thus reducing the distance every resident must travel to reach the nearest station.
Measures for cycling and the future Bordeaux RER
While Bordeaux Métropole supports electric cars, it does not want to promote car use entirely. To that end, it is developing 600 new park-and-ride spaces at METPARK to encourage leaving your car and using public transport within the TBM network:
- Pessac Centre (100)
- Mérignac-Charles de Gaulle (100)
- Floirac Arena (400)
Regarding public transportation, besides trams and buses, Bordeaux has a RER project. Yes, exactly the type of suburban regional train that Emmanuel Macron envisions. Still under consultation, the Metropolitan RER project will require upgrading the future stations of the network, including adding more parking spaces.

Regarding cycling, Bordeaux Métropole continues its third plan with ReVE (Réseau Vélo Express). A new segment between Ravezies Square (bordering Le Bouscat) and Jacques Chaban-Delmas Boulevard (Burgundy) creates a 15-kilometer bike lane spanning Bordeaux, Blanquefort, and Parempuyre.
