Stellantis, TotalEnergies-Saft, and Mercedes-Benz, the EV battery company ACC, are establishing a 3rd factory in Italy.

The electric vehicle battery industry is moving at a frantic pace, even for European players. ACC (Automotive Cells Company) is a joint venture between the giant TotalEnergies through its subsidiary Saft and the automobile group Stellantis, founded in August 2020.

This week, ACC announced two major news: a new shareholder and a new factory.

Mercedes allied with Stellantis and Total

Since last autumn, Mercedes-Benz has joined the ACC venture. The German manufacturer now holds an equal share of the battery company, that is 33.33%. The addition of the group helps better fund the project, now planning an increased battery manufacturing capacity. The budget is now set at 7 billion euros, according to ACC.

Indeed, ACC has increased the maximum capacity of its two factories under construction. The sites in Billy-Berclau/Douvrin (France) and Kaiserslautern (Germany) at Opel will produce 40 GWh instead of 24 GWh in the long run. This figure aligns with Volkswagen’s plans in this area.

Along with this significant development, ACC confirms a third manufacturing site. This factory for electric vehicle batteries will be located in Termoli, Italy. The location is no coincidence, as it is the site of an existing Fiat factory since 1972.

The reconversion will take a few years, however. The first batteries are not expected until 2024, and the capacity will eventually reach 40 GWh. Overall, ACC promises a total capacity of 120 GWh by 2030.

A factory in Italy for ACC, but also another for Stellantis in Canada!

For Stellantis, this is one of the five planned battery factories. The automotive group has also announced another factory in Canada, in Windsor (Ontario). Built with LG Energy Solution (formerly LG Chem), it will start producing in 2024 with a capacity of 45 GWh in the long run. The financing is estimated at 5 billion Canadian dollars, or approximately 3.6 billion euros.
