BYD Yangwang U8L Dingshi

The Chinese manufacturer BYD continues its push into the high-end market with its luxury brand Yangwang.

On September 12, BYD will officially unveil the Yangwang U8L Dingshi Edition, a luxury SUV that was announced for pre-order on July 31 at a price of 1.3 million yuan, approximately €181,000.

The term “Dingshi” refers in Chinese to a prosperous era or a high-ranking family. The vehicle’s style reflects this symbolism: the grille features a design inspired by the Chinese character (鼎), composed of 200 LEDs. Three 24-carat gold emblems also represent the ancient Chinese character for “electricity,” reinforcing the exclusivity of this version.

A luxury monster

In terms of dimensions, the Yangwang U8L measures 5.40 m in length, 2.05 m in width, and 1.92 m in height, with a wheelbase of 3.25 m. Its body incorporates minimalist fenders, a darkened front bumper, and hidden rear lights. It is built on forged 23-inch wheels with floating hubcaps and features a split-opening tailgate.

The interior is distinguished by a generous volume and a 6-seat configuration identical to that of the Tesla Model Y L. The front seats include a 14-point massage system, temperature-regulated armrests, and an audio system integrated into the headrests. The second row features two “zero gravity” seats with an 18-point massage, smart armrests, foldable tablets, and three comfort modes: cinema, reclining, or completely flat. The third row offers heated seats that are electrically adjustable.

On the technical side, the U8L combines a 2.0 turbo internal combustion engine used as a range extender and four electric motors. The combined power reaches 880 kW (1,180 hp) with a torque of 1,280 N·m, with a reported range of 1,160 km. There remains a significant limitation: its curb weight of 3,595 kg (and up to 4,210 kg when loaded) places it beyond the 3.5-ton threshold allowed with a standard license B in Europe. This means that the U8L will currently be reserved for the Chinese market.
