According to the latest Vélo & Territoires report, bicycle traffic is increasing compared to 2021. However, there are disparities depending on the location and the days of the week.

You have probably noticed in large cities, especially with the back-to-school period, that bikes seem to be more and more numerous. Is this just a perception or is it reflected in the statistics? The new Bicycle Attendance Bulletin in France from Vélo & Territoires answers this question.

+33% bicycle traffic compared to 2019

Since the beginning of the year, hundreds of counters across France have recorded +11% more passages compared to 2021. This is even much higher than three years ago, with +33% versus 2021 from January to August.

In cities, cycling is experiencing great success, with +14% in attendance over one year. Confirming the trend of “bike-to-work,” the highest traffic occurs on weekdays. It is also on these days that growth is the strongest, +17% compared to only +6% on weekends.

In suburban and rural areas, the figures stagnate compared to 2021. “As every year, the average number of cyclists counted in suburban and rural areas doubled in summer compared to the rest of the year” recalls the report, “but this is still not enough to rival the averages recorded in cities”. Unlike urban areas, attendance is higher on weekends than on weekdays. In fact, it decreases slightly (-5% and -3%), while cycling activity increases slightly during the week by +1%.

The bulletin also confirms that cycle tourism has gained new followers. The attendance on EuroVelo routes, long trails crossing the continent, soared by 13% in 2022 compared to the previous year, including +7% in July-August.

Bike boom in Dunkirk, Strasbourg, and Grenoble

Compared to last year, Dunkirk shows the strongest progression among the ten major cities with available data. The area reports +30% across its 31 counters, better than Strasbourg with +29% and Grenoble with +26%.

Regarding the evolution compared to the pre-Covid period, Paris is by far the city with the largest increase in bike traffic. Its 64 counters recorded an average of 2,590 passages daily this year, a +71% increase compared to 2019! Dunkirk is the second city with the best progression (+43%), with Annecy in third place with +39%.
