RadPower Radrunner 3 Plus: The Compact Electric American Cargo Bike Is Back!

Specialist in compact and utility bikes, the American brand RadPower introduces the new generation of RadRunner 3 Plus bikes at a reasonable price.

Very popular across the Atlantic, RadPower is still a somewhat low-profile player in our regions. Yet, American electric bikes are well-designed, straddling the line between city bikes and cargo bikes. Less traditional than a Jean Fourche with an European style, the new RadRunner 3 Plus is the monospaced/SUV of its category.

A RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus Packed with Improvements

Launched at the start of 2023, this new generation of electric bike is more modern than the RadRunner Plus simply listed in the catalog. The first major update is the reinforced frame—still open—now housing the battery. With a capacity of 672 Wh, it was previously located behind the seat tube. The RadRunner 3 Plus, however, loses some range, between 40 and 72 km depending on mode, compared to 55 to 88 km previously. The bike now features 5 modes (up from 4), including an accelerator that allows reaching 6 km/h from start. The rear motor, as before, delivers torque through a chain transmission and a 7-speed Shimano Altus derailleur.

RadPower enlarges and cushions the saddle further for better comfort, and adds new front suspension. The wheels remain at 20 inches with large Kenda puncture-proof tires. They now feature new hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro HD-E350. Additionally, the handlebar (which is wider) now sports two screens—one on the left for assistance modes, and a central display showing speed and other information (battery level, time, mileage, etc.).

For practicality, the rear rack increases by 5 cm (to 71 cm overall), supporting up to 54 kg. The RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus also handles up to 158.7 kg, compared to 136 kg for the RadRunner Plus.

A Full Range of Accessories

The advantage of this bike is its customization potential through numerous accessories. The rear rack can be used with a seat for a second passenger or with a child seat, with support bars available. The RadRunner 3 Plus can also be fitted with a front basket or an extra battery to extend range. RadPower also offers a trailer, allowing you to avoid the cost of a very expensive double-long bike, useful for carrying groceries… or your dog!

The Price of the RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus

Despite all the advantages of this practical electric bike, the price remains accessible. The base price of the RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus is €2,499. This is higher than the €1,999 of the RadRunner Plus, and additional costs apply for some accessories mentioned above. Expect €50 for a saddlebag, €80 for a front rack, €139 for a frame-mounted top box, or €149 for the passenger kit with padded seat.

Rivals to this RadPower model include the Gaya Compact (starting at €1,700), the Oklö Origine electric (from €2,870). More expensive options include the Tern QuickHaul (from €3,199) or the Yuba Kombi E5 (from €3,390).
