Mate SUV: This cargo bike wants to replace your second car

With a large loading capacity, this electric tricycle cargo bike is much cheaper than a car for short trips.

In rural areas, about 98% of households own a car. This is due to a lack of public transportation such as buses or trains. However, very often, a second car in a household only covers very short distances. In this context Mate’s cargo bike aims to establish itself.

A bike box that replaces your car

Mate is a Danish company based in Copenhagen. It has already developed the folding bike City, which has a “X” version for off-road riding. The brand’s third bike is different—it’s a cargo bike. Of the tricycle type, with two front wheels and one rear wheel, the Mate SUV is imposing. It features an aluminum frame—90% recycled—with a thick horizontal bar and a large logo. Measuring 2.20 meters long and 92 cm wide, it is twice as short and narrow as a traditional vehicle.

Its front cargo area offers several configurations: open with or without child seats, hood, protective tent, semi-open with side bars, etc. Note that the space can accommodate two children or one adult, with up to 210 liters of volume.

As much torque as your Twingo

Like any e-bike, the Mate SUV limits its motor to 250 W of power—here in a central position—and its speed to 25 km/h. However, its torque of 90 Nm—almost that of a petrol Twingo—will probably allow smooth operation and effortless climbing of all gradients. It also features an Enviolo internal automatic transmission and a flexible belt, which are more practical daily than gears and a chain.

The braking system is equally impressive, with three hydraulic disc brakes housed in the wheels, equipped with large balloon tires, whether standard or all-terrain. The Danish cargo bike’s hidden battery provides an estimated range of 100 km, according to the manufacturer.

What is the price of the Mate SUV cargo bike?

The Mate triporteur cargo bike is not yet available. However, it is expected in 2023, across Europe and the United Kingdom. Starting at 6,499 €, it is currently only available for pre-order—at 49 €. It will also be eligible for various purchase incentives:
