Toll Fees: Prices Increase by 2% on February 1, 2022

After moderate increases over the past two years, toll prices will sharply rise by an average of 2% on French motorways.

Cars remain the most used mode of transport for the French. However, following the surge in fuel prices (excluding E85) at service stations, another piece of bad news awaits motorists this Tuesday.

A 2% increase, but not for everyone

The price increase for tolls is officially recorded in several decrees from January 27, 2022. On average, networks will implement a new tariff schedule with a rise of +2%. This is higher than inflation, which was calculated at +1.6% for 2021 by INSEE, but lower than the consumer price index at +2.6%.

In 2021, tolls increased by 0.44%. In 2020, companies promised to stay below 1% after the Yellow Vest crisis, applying an average increase of 0.80% after +1.90% in 2019. This same movement also enabled the creation of a 30% discount for frequent users through subscriptions.

Additionally, Vinci Autoroutes confirmed this Monday a freeze on prices for “short-distance trips”. According to the company, this affects “4/5 of trips under 30 km, 2/3 of trips under 50 km, as well as all bypass routes of 34 urban areas”.

Toll prices in detail

However, the 2% toll increase is not uniform across all highways. Here is the list of the different changes by network as of February 1, 2022:

• Cofiroute: 1.896%
• Sanef: 1.911%
• APRR: 2.051%
• ASF: 2.191%
• SAPN: 2.119%

These rates are applicable only to Class 1 vehicles, which include all passenger cars and utility vehicles under 3.5 tons and less than 2 meters in height. Other classes have different prices for each network. Class 2 pertains to utility vehicles under 3 meters tall and motorhomes. Class 3 includes heavy trucks or buses with 2 axles, while Class 4 encompasses vehicles with more than 3 axles or more. Two-wheelers, tricycles, and motorized quadricycles are classified together in Class 5.

On average, here is what should be applied for each category:

• Class 2: +50%
• Class 3: +110%
• Class 4: +200%
• Class 5: -40%
