ASX inaugurates a new era at Mitsubishi: that of rebadged Renaults.
Struggling in the European market, Mitsubishi will rely on the Alliance and especially Renault to try to maintain an acceptable level of sales in this part of the globe. With its new ASX, the manufacturer confirms that it will stick to the bare minimum, rebadging models already marketed by the Losange.
If we set aside logos and the grille, the new ASX is identical in every way to the Renault Captur, including on the technical level. It will therefore feature the same powertrains. In addition to the 90 hp petrol engine and the 140 and 158 hp micro-hybrids, the range will include a simple hybrid version of 145 hp and a plug-in hybrid of 160 hp. The electric range of the latter has been measured at 49 km, according to the WLTP combined cycle.
Lightly Updated Hybrid Powertrains
These two electrified versions benefit from slight improvements in the battery. Capacity increases to 1.3 kWh for the simple hybrid, and to 10.5 kWh for the plug-in hybrid. The Renault Captur will have to wait for its facelift (probably next year) to benefit from these upgrades. Meanwhile, it will be limited to smaller batteries (respectively 1.2 and 9.8 kWh).
The ASX will gradually arrive on roads starting March 2023. It will be produced in Spain, alongside the Renault Captur. Prices have not yet been announced. Like all Mitsubishi vehicles, it will come with a 5-year warranty, which is 3 years longer than the Renault Captur.
In a few months, Mitsubishi will repeat the process with a new clone of a Renault model. This time, it’s the Clio that will be reproduced as-is or nearly so. After passing through Mitsubishi, the car will be renamed Colt.
