Why the new Mercedes S-Class is changing the rules of luxury

The new Mercedes S-Class modernizes design, onboard technologies, and powertrains to maintain its status as a benchmark.

The new Mercedes S-Class represents the most significant evolution ever made to a generation of the model. More than 50% of its components, approximately 2,700 elements, have been newly developed or revised. This update coincides with the 140th anniversary of the automobile, since the invention by Carl Benz, and aims to keep the S-Class as the technological showcase of the brand.

In terms of design, the sedan adopts a more assertive identity. The grille gains about 20% in surface area and can now be optionally paired with a illuminated Mercedes star on the hood. The new DIGITAL LIGHT projectors with a double star, based on micro-LED technology, increase lighting power by about 40%, improving nighttime visibility and the precision of adaptive beams. At the rear, the redesigned lights enhance the model’s light signature.

A luxury chip factory

However, the most striking transformation concerns the onboard technology. The S-Class introduces the new MB.OS operating system, which centralizes all vehicle functions within a unified computing architecture. Connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, it allows for remote updates for numerous functions, ensuring continuous software evolution. The latest generation MBUX system, equipped with artificial intelligence, enhances voice control, navigation, and interface customization, featuring immersive navigation based on Google Maps.

Driving aids also progress thanks to MB.DRIVE, which relies on an extensive combination of cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors. Depending on markets and local regulations, certain versions will offer advanced assisted driving and automated parking functions, with increased anticipation capabilities in urban areas.

On board, the S-Class strengthens its premium positioning with the MBUX Superscreen, rear seat features dedicated to comfort and productivity, as well as a particular focus on well-being, notably through improved air filtration and new thermal comfort solutions. Mechanically, the range is based on electrified powertrains, including gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options, coupled with sophisticated suspension systems like AIRMATIC or E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL.

With this evolution, the S-Class does not change its philosophy: it adjusts its fundamentals to remain the technological and safety benchmark in the luxury sedan segment.
