Tesla Model Y: a cheaper and more interesting version!

Tesla enriches the Model Y lineup with a new affordable configuration that combines a reasonable price and all-wheel drive.

Tesla continues to refine its strategy around its global best-seller. The American manufacturer has just launched a new All-Wheel Drive version of the Model Y Standard in the United States, priced at $41,990, making it the fifth configuration now available for the electric SUV. A discreet announcement, but far from inconsequential, as it enhances the appeal of the cheapest Model Y.

This new variant is positioned just above the Model Y Propulsion, priced at $39,990. For a relatively modest increase, Tesla adds a second motor here, providing all-wheel drive, while maintaining solid characteristics: approximately 473 km of range, a maximum speed of 200 km/h, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. These figures place this version as one of the most versatile in the lineup.

More safety for a well-controlled price

Unofficially named the Model Y Standard All-Wheel Drive, this configuration is part of the streamlined versions introduced by Tesla last year. It stands out from the Premium trims due to the absence of certain more luxurious features, reserved for the more expensive variants, whether they are propulsion, all-wheel drive, or Performance versions. A deliberate way to prioritize the essentials: efficiency, performance, and price.

With five versions of the Model Y now available, Tesla is increasing the entry points to its most popular vehicle. This diversification comes in a strong strategic context: Elon Musk recently confirmed the cessation of production for the Model S and Model X, in order to free up industrial capacity for other projects, notably the humanoid robot Optimus.

This refocusing on the Model Y also aligns with Tesla’s long-term vision, which is geared towards autonomy and future robotaxi services. In the long run, the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybercab are expected to form the backbone of this autonomous fleet, while the Cybertruck will shift towards a more utilitarian role.
