Here is the cheapest new Toyota available right now

Until November 19, 2023, Toyota is offering a €2,000 discount on its city car Aygo X, bringing the starting price down to €16,900.

Aygo X (egoist?) is not a character from the latest Asterix adventure album. No, at Toyota, the X is pronounced “Cross,” in the English way. And the Aygo (not the Aligot!) is the name of the Japanese manufacturer’s small city car. A queen of city centers where its tiny size allows it to weave through traffic everywhere and fit into mouse-sized parking spots.

Unfortunately, nowadays, due to the mandatory safety equipment on all new cars (ABS, ESP, tire pressure sensors, traffic sign reading, lane departure alert, etc.), as well as crash-test requirements, a city car under €15,000 no longer really exists.

The Aygo X is no exception, despite Toyota’s efforts to offer, until November 19, 2023, a €2,000 discount. But at €16,900, there are serious, more spacious rivals: Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, Mitsubishi Colt, etc.

Engine

Trusted manufacturer, Toyota offers reliable engines with interesting performance. Thus, the entry-level Dynamic trim features the small 3-cylinder naturally aspirated 1.0-liter engine with 72 horsepower. Since the car is lightweight and the engine spirited, the combination works quite well.

The transmission is a 5-speed gearbox. The top speed is limited to 158 km/h, so long trips on the highway will be tolerable—mechanically and audibly—at the authorized 130 km/h. Beyond that, it will be challenging for everyone. And to overtake, you’ll need to rely on downhill stretches…

In mixed driving, fuel consumption is 4.8 liters per 100 km, and CO2 emissions are 108 g/km. For €1,000, an automatic transmission is available.

Exterior

With well-protected wheel arches, the Aygo X combines practicality with style, as its look is not unattractive. Only one color is offered without extra charge: pure white. Other metallic shades (gray, blue, and black) add a €600 surcharge.

The 17-inch wheels—a sizable diameter for a city car!—are fitted with plastic covers. The tires are Falken 175/65R17.

Interior

The ambiance strongly resembles the “Renault Twingo” of the 1990s, with the exterior paint replicated inside. In this case, there’s a lot of white (color) and black (hard plastics). Materials and finishing are fairly basic, but the build quality bears the Toyota label—meaning it is durable.

As for the trunk, don’t plan to travel heavily loaded or expect to bring back an Ikea sofa…

Conversely, the equipment is exceptionally generous and somewhat surprising for this trim level:

Conclusion

Small city buzz, the Toyota Aygo X can be seen as a modern version of the brilliant Twingo original. Agile and clever, it is, however, not cheap due to its very generous equipment. It is a drawback that should be considered when comparing it to its rivals.
