Volvo’s electric giant earns its five stars

Five stars Euro NCAP for the Volvo EX90: the large electric SUV confirms the safety ambitions of the Swedish brand.

The Volvo EX90, the Swedish brand’s fully electric large SUV, has just received the maximum five-star rating in the latest series of safety tests conducted by the independent organization Euro NCAP. For Volvo, whose image is largely based on a historical expertise in occupant protection, a setback would have been detrimental. However, the manufacturer here confirms the strength of its technological and safety strategy.

Capable of accommodating up to seven passengers, the EX90 distinguished itself with excellent results in adult and child protection, two central criteria in the Euro NCAP protocol. These performances are part of a legacy that Volvo claims: over 55 years of studies on real-world accidents and over 50,000 analyzed incidents, representing a unique database involving more than 80,000 individuals. This field knowledge informs the design of the manufacturer’s models, well beyond regulatory requirements.

Active and passive safety

The EX90 is built on an advanced technological architecture, centered around a powerful central computer and a suite of sensors – cameras, radars, and lidars – capable of interpreting the vehicle’s environment in real time. All of these devices form the Safe Space technology, unique to the brand, which aims to anticipate and mitigate risks for both occupants and external users. Thanks to remote updates, these systems can evolve over time, a strategic aspect now in the automotive industry.

Among the notable features, Volvo highlights its driver understanding system, capable of assessing the driver’s condition – fatigue, distraction, or incapacity – and responding accordingly. Already praised by international media, it illustrates the comprehensive onboard safety approach that the brand aims to implement. The EX90 also integrates an occupant detection system, based on ultra-sensitive radars, designed to prevent forgetting a passenger, even an immobile child, inside the cabin.
