Volvo EX30: 1600 Euros Price Increase, the Final Blow?

Already very discreet in our streets, the electric compact Volvo EX30 is unlikely to become more popular following its price increase.

This is a decision that goes against the trend. While all manufacturers manage to lower the prices of their products, particularly due to a more efficient industrial tool and also decreasing raw material prices, Volvo is raising the price of its new EX30. And not by a small amount: +1600 euros on the base model Start, which goes from 37,500 to 39,100 euros. All of this without any ecological bonus, since the production of the Swedish brand takes place in China.

Let’s remember that Volvo was saved from bankruptcy by the Chinese Geely after Ford got rid of it.

A wise repositioning… or suicidal?

Let’s focus only on the entry-level version Start, which sets the tone for the rest of the range. By its choice, Volvo seems to want to distance itself from the price race that places it in direct competition with products that are certainly just as – if not more – relevant. We are thinking in particular of the Renault Megane, which has equal proportions but provides superior performance for much less money.

By betting on a high-end positioning, at least in terms of price, Volvo seems to want to approach things with superiority. Will the future prove them right? It’s hard to think so, as with only 337 km of range in mixed cycle, this Volvo EX30 is only 800 euros cheaper than an ultra-sophisticated Tesla Model 3 Propulsion that enjoys over 500 km of range.

On paper, there’s no match. And that is the real problem, as nothing can justify such a pricing decision. So, is this a clever repositioning or suicidal for the EX30? The future will tell.
