Is the Volvo EX30 suffering from a fatal bug?

The Sino-Swedish manufacturer explained the reason for the long delay in delivery of their small SUV EX30 and cannot specify when they will begin.

Manufacturers are engaging in an increasingly dangerous game. By showcasing their new models months and months before they go on sale, they risk disappointment. Revealed almost a year ago, the Volvo EX30 is one such example. Attractive, initially well priced, it is already nearly obsolete while we still haven’t seen it on the road.

Since its reveal, the Volvo EX30 has been significantly overtaken by events. In Germany and France, it has lost all ecological bonuses. At the same time, competitors have advanced quietly and were quicker to launch at dealerships, such as Renault and Peugeot with their SUVs Scenic and e-3008. Similarly, Renault has completely revised the prices of its electric lineup, dropping the Megane E-Tech by nearly 5,000 euros. And, the Megane is clearly Volvo EX30’s main rival, which today costs as much as the world’s best-selling car: the Tesla Model Y.

A CAREER THREATENED?

The timing is therefore off for Volvo, which finally explained the reasons behind this delay that could prove fatal for the small EX30. Because customers tire quickly…

Thus, in an interview with our British colleagues at Automotive News, a Volvo official revealed that the problem stemmed from the EX30’s software, which still has imperfections. The second issue is that the vehicle would be unable to start its production with an incomplete version and then push a remote update, called Over the Air, like its competitors. Therefore, the software must either be installed at the factory or later at dealerships via a significant recall.

And rather than being disappointing, Volvo prefers to delay deliveries. It should be noted that orders are already open. But no delivery date has been promised to customers, which is problematic… It also helps explain why the rugged version Cross Country has also been kept out of communication for a few weeks…
