The luxurious firm of Hyundai, Genesis, wins the Car of the Year award in China with its fully electric GV60 model.
This is a result no one would have bet on. Not that the Genesis GV60 is a bad car, but we are aware of Chinese protectionism. The Car of the Year election in China combines the votes of 40 journalists and judges from various publications.
And in the SUV category, the award went to the creation of the Genesis manufacturer, a luxurious extension of Hyundai similar to how Lexus is to Toyota. Facing it in the final, the GV60 had serious rivals… Chinese ones: the Lotus Eletre and the Geely Galaxy X7. However, the decision was clear-cut: 186 points for Hyundai, 121 for Lotus, and 103 for Geely.
The GV60 is built on Hyundai’s renowned platform also used by the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, equipped with a 76 kWh battery. Besides its attractive design and high manufacturing quality, Genesis stands out for its pricing: starting at 36,000 euros in China. Its charging speed, thanks to its 800-volt architecture, scored points, even though the Lotus Eletre performs just as well.
However, with a weight of 2.3 tons, the Lotus suffers from a higher cost and lower range. Sometimes, the best isn’t always perfect, and Genesis seems to have found the right balance for everyday use.
