The resurrection of the Renault Twingo!

The new Renault costing less than 20,000 euros will be an electric Twingo. A return to the roots with a model close to the iconic one from the 1990s.

Luca di Meo managed to increase the anticipation ahead of the Ampere presentation this Wednesday. A lineup of 7 electric vehicles is finally announced for 2031, including Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, Renault 5, Renault 4, two cousins under the brands Alpine and Nissan, and the one previously known under the code “Legend” which will be launched in 2026… Twingo. Well spotted!

Renault has decided to highlight a nostalgic retro story because the car presented today, although only a concept car, is heavily inspired by the first-generation model introduced in 1992. Those small round headlights, the cartoon-like silhouette, the air intake on the right side of the front hood, the door handles with rings—everything brings a smile and lovely memories. How could one imagine that this Twingo, which has become a cult classic and has never been matched by later generations, was so heavily criticized and even mocked at its launch? One major change, and it is significant, the version presented today is a five-door!

But high expectations bring great responsibilities, and Renault will need to deliver a flawless product, especially since this car will only arrive on our roads in 2026.

Because the challenge in this market of affordable small city cars is significant for the diamond brand. With its ë-C3, a zero-emission city car costing less than 25,000 euros before ecological bonus, or about 20,000 euros in reality, Citroën has already positioned itself in this promising sector of electric low-cost vehicles. Of course, there is also the Romanian cousin Dacia Spring, but unlike the small Romanian model produced in China, the Citroën offers a much higher quality finish and features worthy of its time. Its production will be carried out at Stellantis’ factory in Trnava, Slovakia, starting from the second quarter of 2024.
