The cheapest Renault 5 tested
This page is translated from the original post "La moins chère des Renault 5 à l’essai" in French.

To judge a car, it is always interesting to study the entry-level version. So, how does the Renault 5 E-Tech Urban Range fare?
Listed at a starting price of 25,990 euros, after deducting a 2,000 euro eco bonus, the Renault 5 E-Tech in Urban Range version positions itself as an affordable alternative for those wanting to switch to electric. Equipped with a 120 hp motor and a 40 kWh battery, it offers a WLTP range of 312 km. But what compromises must be accepted for this attractive price?
A simple version but not downgraded
Despite some concessions, such as steel wheel covers instead of alloy wheels and the absence of tinted glass, the R5 retains an undeniable vintage charm. The “Disco” hubcaps even strengthen its retro look. Our test model featured an elegant pearl white paint (optional at 650 euros), which certainly helped turn some heads.

A quick note to highlight the incredible friendly appeal of this car. Smiles, thumbs up, selfies in front of it… with this R5, it’s all about pleasure! A week earlier, during a test drive of the new Tesla Model Y, we experienced a particularly unpleasant episode with remarks and mockery during a photoshoot. The contrast is strikingly stark.
Focus on essentials inside
Inside, the savings are noticeable. The fabric inserts found in higher trims give way to hard plastic, which is less pleasant to the touch but looks sturdy. The raw plastic steering wheel and the absence of a central armrest reinforce the minimalist finish impression. Nevertheless, the seats remain very comfortable, and the cabin, though simple, proves functional.

Regarding features, this version omits some modern elements available in the Techno or Iconic finishes: rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, wireless charging, extended dashboard, and GPS navigation. However, this can be offset by the smartphone replication via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which are much more intuitive than Renault’s multimedia system. Essentially, there are always small details that make you feel you’re driving a Renault. The digital menus defy logic, the RND selector is just a few millimeters from the wiper control, and the start button is camouflaged on the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Renault will always be Renault.
A small commuter car
The announced WLTP range of 312 km drops to about 150 km on the highway according to our measurements. In mixed use, without any restraint on the accelerator and without particular effort, we recorded an average consumption of 16 kWh per 100 km, which guarantees 250 km in real-life conditions. With some effort, it’s possible to achieve much better in urban driving. With a domestic charger at home or work, you will never have any issues with this car. Fast charging peaks at 80 kW, but reaching 80% in 28 minutes, it remains acceptable. At home, the built-in 11 kW charger ensures efficient recharging, sufficient for urban use.

And behind the wheel?
Despite a limited power of 120 hp, the R5 remains lively and enjoyable to drive. Its agile handling and soft steering immediately inspire confidence, and the instant throttle response creates the impression of much higher power. The magic of electric motors. It quickly becomes pleasurable to find some curves to play with the rear axle, and ultimately, the four-season tires bring you back to the reality of a strong squeal. This car is an excellent balance, and we regret the absence of customizable driving modes on this version. Believe us, we’re eager to try the Sport mode on a higher trim.

However, the absence of certain features, such as front radars, can pose problems during maneuvers. Unlike the rearview camera, which can be easily compensated with good reflexes, this absence is truly felt and requires an additional investment of a few euros. A bumper paint will always cost much more.
Bravo Renault!
In summary, this Renault 5 Urban Range really seduced us with its price and behavior, but do not overlook the concessions in equipment and versatility. Ideal for local use, it is not suitable if you regularly undertake journeys over 200 km. In fact, its main competitor will be the 95 hp version expected this summer, as the engine is the only point we have nothing to criticize. Enjoying driving an electric car is primarily about identifying your needs and choosing the vehicle that meets them. This R5 is a perfect illustration of that.
