Tesla recalls 9,136 Model X for an unprecedented reason

Technical troubles are multiplying for Tesla, forced by the American automotive safety authority to recall the Model X.

Innovation continues at Tesla, where a new recall related to active safety has been mandated by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). This defect concerns the headliner, which could detach inside the cabin. The manufacturer does not go into further detail, but it is worth noting that Tesla’s roofs are always glass. Therefore, the trim should be located on the sides.

However, this assembly quality issue on the Model X, an electric SUV costing nearly 100,000 euros, creates a bad impression as it is not technologically advanced. The NHTSA is not much more forthcoming, mentioning a problem with the adhesive of two interior trim pieces that can separate.

A monthly recall rate for Tesla?

Favoring a technical approach known as “crash and learn,” Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk prefer to launch products quickly and then fix them. Unfortunately, this sometimes comes at the expense of the consumer and the safety of other road users.

Just during this summer of 2024, Tesla has already had to issue several recalls due to defects in the gigantic Cybertruck’s wipers, suspension issues with the Model S and Model X, an electronic correction affecting 1.6 million cars, and updating its autonomous driving software after multiple complaints in the United States following fatal accidents, etc.

Reuters estimates that 2.6 million Teslas have been recalled for safety reasons in the first six months of 2024. All these recalls are at the manufacturer’s expense, which partially impacts its financial results and consumer trust. In fact, for the first time in years, Tesla is no longer number one in customer satisfaction in the United States. This trend needs to be reversed as soon as possible.
